From SirsiDynix, to Polaris, to Vega, StackMap Makes the Transition Smooth
In an effort to enhance their catalog experience and improve user accessibility, Sterling Heights Public Library integrated StackMap into their system as they transitioned from Polaris to Vega. This change aimed to streamline how patrons locate materials and navigate the library more efficiently. We spoke with Jason Groth, Technical Services Coordinator, and Anneliese White, Public Relations and Programs Coordinator, about their experience with StackMap throughout the migration process.
"We first implemented StackMap during the summer of 2021, and then that fall, we decided to switch to Polaris from Sirsi-Dynix and later to Vega. Overall, that process was very straightforward and easy. The StackMap staff was extremely helpful in aiding us through the transitions between the catalogs."
Many libraries assume that migrating to a new catalog requires redoing their StackMap setup, but the process is actually seamless. Libraries simply receive a new embedded code snippet from StackMap based on their new catalog, with no additional cost. Since StackMap integrates with all major discovery layers and catalogs, the transition is quick and requires minimal effort.
One of the key benefits of StackMap’s integration with Vega has been its ability to help patrons locate materials with ease. The intuitive interface and accurate mapping system have provided users with a reliable experience, reducing the need for staff assistance in finding collections.
"Staff and patrons have shared really great experiences with the StackMap-Vega integration. Students have said that even when trying to find new collections, StackMap has been able to get them where they need to be without needing the guidance of the library staff."
Beyond internal feedback, Sterling Heights Public Library leveraged their social media presence to educate patrons about the benefits of the ‘Map It’ feature, receiving enthusiastic engagement and support from their community.
"There was a lot of positive feedback from the public as well. We shared on our social media platforms how StackMap works, what the ‘Map It’ button looks like in the catalog, and how it can be a useful tool for all users alike. Many people engaged with the post, expressing their excitement."
The success of the StackMap and Vega integration highlights Sterling Heights Public Library’s commitment to providing a user-friendly and innovative library experience, as well as StackMap’s dedication to continuously enhancing the Collection Mapping experience to integrate with new catalogs and discovery layers. StackMap remains at the forefront of discovery layer, catalog, and UI advancements by maintaining strong partnerships with catalog providers and staying up to date with emerging technologies. With a strong foundation in place, Sterling Heights Public Library is eager to see how this technology continues to enhance their services.
