Increasing Traffic to Special Areas of the Library with StackMap

Spanish Fork Library is one of many libraries that has found success since integrating StackMap Collection Mapping. They have seen increased traffic with both their catalog and special displays, which has helped expand the capabilities of their library. We were able to sit down with Tia Haycock, a catalog librarian, to discuss Collection Mapping outcomes and how StackMap was able to understand their implementation concerns and address their needs in more ways than one.

Given we are a small library and had just worked through a lot of moving of collections we were unsure of the implementation process and how we would be able to do it. Luckily, the StackMap team was able to support and guide us through the process and we were excited to begin.

During the implementation process, we had to work with our staff to organize collections. Before the process, as librarians, we hadn’t spent that much time thinking about how and where collections would be organized. After we had finished the mapping process, we were able to find the best locations for our items in the library. StackMap helped by showing us all of our locations–in the Dashboard, and based on that we created more relevant locations.

We have seen increased patron engagement in certain areas of the library. Specifically, the moveable children’s section shelves that kids are able to climb on top of and the special collections. Since we have so many moving shelves, I’m able to log into the StackMap Dashboard, change the shelving that I need, and the updates are immediate. Using the StackMap Dashboard itself has been super straightforward.

Since having StackMap, we’ve been able to improve wayfinding for our patrons by being able to update the ranges and shelving based on what patrons have been asking to read. We are working to increase patron education by pushing patrons to use the existing map-it button. They find it super easy to use and find what they need with ease. Once patrons have been made aware of StackMap they have shown much excitement!

Spanish Fork Library has benefitted from Collection Mapping in many ways. They have been able to better organize their stacks for patron usage and can easily update StackMap to reflect the new location of shelving. Spanish Fork Library’s experience with StackMap underscores the importance of innovative solutions in enhancing library services.
